Barney Rush
Barney Rush is a Managing Director with Hamilton Clark Sustainable Capital. He retired in September 2022 from the Board of directors of ISO – New England, a position he held for nine years. The ISO – New England is the electric grid authority that operates the wholesale power markets and ensures reliability for the six-state region of New England. He was Chair of the Markets Committee and served on the Nominating and Governance Committee. He has served previously on the Audit and Finance and Compensation and HR Committees and has been chair of the Joint Nominating Committee.
From 2019 until his retirement in September of 2021, Mr. Rush was also Chair of the Board of Directors of Azure Power Global, a major developer of utility-scale solar plants in India. He chaired the Nom & Gov and Compensation Committees for Azure and served on the Capital Committee. He previously had been the lead director of Azure from 2017-2019, having joined the board in 2016. In addition, he has been a Senior Representative for Fieldstone, an advisory firm focused on raising capital for infrastructure in Africa and other emerging markets.
Mr. Rush was an Operating Partner at Denham Capital Management from 2010 through 2013. Before that, he was CEO of H2Gen Innovations, Inc., a venture-capital-backed start up that developed, manufactured, and sold skid-mounted hydrogen generation plants. Previously, he was Group Chief Executive Officer, Europe, for Mirant Corporation. While at Mirant, Mr. Rush was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bewag, the electric utility serving Berlin, Germany, and was Chairman of the Board of WPD, the regional distribution company serving southwest England and southern Wales.
Previously, Mr. Rush was Executive Vice President of Oxbow Corporation, where he was responsible for developing and financing co-generation and geothermal power plants; and was Senior Vice President of Lehman Brothers, where he arranged non-recourse financing for hydro and co-generation power plants. Earlier at Lehman Brothers, Mr. Rush worked with a team advising emerging market countries on debt restructuring. Prior positions included serving as a special assistant to the Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs in the US Department of State and as a research assistant at the World Bank.
Mr. Rush has been the Mayor of the Town of Chevy Chase, and currently serves as Vice Mayor. He has been on the Town Council since 2016.
He holds a master’s degree from the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs (previously called the Woodrow Wilson School) and a bachelor’s degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Harvard College.
